Angus

Concept: A sweet, happy book about a lab who tries repeatedly to bring a toy to a new houseguest.

Style: ABCB Rhyme Scheme, with an occasional extra CB thrown in for spice. The tone is fun and bouncy.

There is a dog named Angus.
He’s the goodest of good boys.
And if you care to visit,
He will bring you all his toys.

The doorbell – it is ringing!
Oh, what a happy day!
The visitor deserves a gift
For coming all this way.

So, Angus comes a-bounding
With his fluffy, stuffy hen.
It has wings and feet and feathers
First prize! Ten out of ten!

But the visitor won’t take it,
So Angus tries again.

This next toy is a sight to see

A freaky, squeaky critter

If you think you know just what it is,

You should really reconsider.

But the visitor won’t take it,

And Angus is no quitter.

Here’s a knotty, spotty rope toy,

That’s just a little used.

This tug-of-war invitation

Could never be refused.

But the visitor won’t take it

Now Angus is confused

Someone new is in his house.

Angus has a job to do.

He doesn’t know what toy to bring.

He hasn’t got have a clue.

But Angus is a smart boy,

The goodest, bestest pup.

He’ll find the perfect toy for her.

He isn’t giving up!

Angus brings a fuzzy sailboat,

And a squishy pickup truck.

He tries a bear, a frog, a hare,

But never any luck.

The clock, it is a-ticking.

Toys are piled on the floor.

But if toys aren’t what’s needed,

There are more things to explore.

He brings the guest a pillow,

A sweater that barely fits,

A hat, a book, a sandal,

And a pair of oven mitts.

But the visitor won’t take it.

She won’t take anything.

Angus once was so excited

When he heard the doorbell ring.

Now Angus is a-pouting,

Because what else can he bring?

The visitor comes over

To where Angus is lying flat.

She reaches over the toy pile,

And give his doggie head a pat.

The patting turns to snuggles.

The guest joins him on the rug.

Is this what she wanted?

Not toys, but just a hug?

Well, this visitor is lucky

This dog’s snuggles can’t be beat!

The visitor is so happy.

Angus’s job is now complete

Someone else can put these toys away.

It’s time for good boys to eat!
